SILVER SPRING -- In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Maryland gubernatorial candidate Tom Perez hosted a virtual conversation with U.S. Senator Alex Padilla and local and state Latino leaders on the importance of mobilizing Latinos to engage in the political process, and announced endorsements from 10 members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

During the conversation, the group discussed their own paths to public service and advocacy, the voter registration and turnout gap among Latino voters, and how to best support Latinos looking to get involved in the political process.
In addition to the virtual conversation, Perez announced a large slate of endorsements from members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.
- U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (CA)

In their endorsements, the members of Congress cited Perez’s lifetime commitment to fighting for racial and economic justice, as well as his dedication to serving working people in Maryland and across the country.
“Only 40% of the roughly 250,000 eligible Latinos are registered to vote, and voter turnout among Latinos is incredibly low. It’s our duty to change that, and it’s got to be an all-hands-on-deck effort to make it happen. It was an honor to convene this incredible group of Latino leaders to discuss the work that must be done to ensure that Latinos make their voices heard in our democracy, and to receive the endorsements of key national leaders fighting for Latinos in the halls of Congress each and every day,” said Tom Perez.
“The biggest question in front of us at the federal level, at the state level where we’ll see Tom next year, and at the local level in each and every community is how do we recover even stronger after the devastation from the COVID pandemic? How we recover, where the opportunity and equity are going to be in education, in health care, in job opportunity, in so many ways. That is what is at stake and that is why we so desperately need Tom Perez’s leadership as the next Governor of Maryland,” said Senator Alex Padilla.
"Tom Perez has dedicated his life to public service and fighting on behalf of working families and the most vulnerable in our society. He started his career working on the side of a garbage truck to help pay for school and ultimately served as President Obama’s Labor Secretary. Tom knows the value of hard work and he has the experience needed to lead the state of Maryland. I’m proud to endorse my friend Tom Perez to be the first Latino Governor of Maryland," said Senator Ben Ray Lujan.
“As the son of immigrants from the Dominican Republic, Tom Perez was raised to fight for working families and to make sure that justice is equal for all. Tom has lived through some of the same tremendous challenges faced by so many Maryland families, which is why his leadership is so important and needed at this pivotal moment in time. I’m proud to stand with Tom, who understands what commitment to public service truly means and is ready to be a champion for all Marylanders,” said Congressman Ruben Gallego (AZ-07).
“Tom Perez has dedicated his life to serving the public. Prior to serving as Secretary of the Department of Labor, he led the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. No matter the role, Tom Perez has always relentlessly fought to improve the lives of hard-working families – from increasing good-paying jobs, to upholding social justice for all. Without a doubt, he is the kind of leader Marylanders need,” said Congressman Raul Grijalva (AZ-03).
“At a time when we need leaders who are willing to put politics aside and fight for issues that matter to working families -- like expanding access to quality education and increasing good-paying jobs -- Tom Perez is running for Governor of Maryland to ensure that the next generation of Marylanders has the opportunity to pursue their dreams and succeed. As the son of immigrants from the Dominican Republic, Perez understands that immigrants are the bedrock of our nation and he will work to create a more just and equitable Maryland that uplifts and protects workers and their families -- and leaves no one behind,” said Congressman Salud Carbajal (CA-24).
“Tom Perez is a person of integrity and conviction. From fighting against voter suppression and anti-LGBTQ discrimination as the head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, to standing up for America’s working families so they can get better wages and job benefits as the Secretary of the Department of Labor, Perez has proven time and again to be an effective leader. Tom Perez will continue to be a champion for justice and for dignity for all the people of Maryland,” said Congressman Tony Cardenas (CA-29).
“Tom Perez is an experienced leader with a track record of improving the lives of working families, fostering economic opportunity, and standing up for workers. Perez understands firsthand the struggles many families in Maryland are now facing. He is now running for Governor to ensure the same opportunities offered to him exist for the next generation of Marylanders,” said Congressman Jimmy Gomez (CA-34).
“Tom Perez is a civil rights champion and dedicated public servant who will deliver solutions for the working families of Maryland. His years of service to the country show that he will be a leader who will not be afraid to stand up to injustices and who will fight for all Marylanders. Perez will put people before politics, work to expand access to affordable health care, and increase economic opportunities for families to ensure our economy works for everyone. I’m honored to endorse him in this important race,” said Congresswoman Linda Sanchez (CA-38).
“As the Secretary of the Department of Labor, Tom Perez worked tirelessly to protect and expand opportunities for America’s working families. These efforts included advocating for overtime pay, retirement security, and collective bargaining rights in order to help workers reach their full potential. Perez has dedicated his entire career to improving the lives of all Americans, and he will continue doing the same for all Marylanders,” said Congressman Darren Soto (FL-09).
“Maryland needs a leader like Tom Perez, who has a proven track record of getting things done. Tom has spent his career helping workers and protecting the rights of all Americans from voting rights to disability rights. Tom gives Democrats the best shot of turning Maryland from red to blue and will implement progressive policies that will strengthen working families. We’re proud to endorse Tom Perez to be the first Latino governor of Maryland," said Congressman Filemon Vela (TX-34).
“Electing Tom Perez – a transformative change agent – to the governor’s mansion will help rebuild after eight years of disastrous nativist Republican leadership," said Gustavo Torres, CASA in Action Board President. “Tom’s history fighting for criminal justice and voting rights at the Department of Justice had meaningful and deep impacts on our members’ lives. His absolutely transformative work first as the Maryland Secretary of Labor then as the US Secretary of Labor both peeled back decades of policies favoring corporate executives over workers and put this country on the path to an overall overtime law needed for generations.”
