The UA is the latest labor organization to endorse the Perez-Sneed ticket, following the recent endorsement from the Maryland State and District of Columbia AFL-CIO, the state’s largest federation of unions, which represents over 700 union locals.
“Tom Perez is a proven fighter for the men and women of the United Association, and he’ll have our back in Annapolis. We don’t need another politician who will just promise to create jobs or protect our gold-standard apprenticeship programs, or who will promise to stand up to big business and hold non-union contractors accountable. We need someone with the track record to back it up. Tom Perez has that track record,” said Mark McManus, General President of the United Association. “For working families like ours, having a Governor who is committed to creating good-paying jobs with fair benefits, to protecting Davis-Bacon prevailing wage laws, ensuring the use of project labor agreements, and fighting the scourge of wage theft and worker misclassification is essential to making sure all Marylanders have a fair shot at the middle class. We are proud to have Tom’s back in this campaign, because he has always had ours – and we know he always will.”
“Like my mentor and former boss Ted Kennedy used to say: “middle class is spelled U-N-I-O-N. The right to organize and collectively bargain is the backbone of the American middle class – and it always will be,” Tom Perez said. “As Secretary of Labor under President Obama, I proudly promoted policies to support our union brothers and sisters so we could build pipelines to prosperity and forged win-win solutions that benefited workers, employers, and communities. I'll continue that work as governor and ensure Maryland’s workers always have a seat at the table.”
Perez, the former Maryland and U.S. Labor Secretary has earned the support of the vast majority of unions, including American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW), Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), Communications Workers of America (CWA), and more in his campaign for governor
Throughout his career in public service, Tom Perez has developed significant experience taking on big fights and winning for working families. As Secretary of Maryland’s Department of Labor Licensing and Regulation, he implemented the nation’s first statewide living wage law, fought corporate wage theft, and rebuilt the agency to protect homeowners across the state facing foreclosure and fraud, making the state a national bellwether for accountability early in the housing crisis.
During his tenure as U.S. Labor Secretary in the Obama administration, Perez enforced laws protecting workers on the job, advocated for nationwide paid sick and family leave, and created more than 125,000 apprenticeship opportunities. Perez fought for fairer wages, spearheading efforts to protect workers’ retirement savings and to ensure overtime protections. As Labor Secretary, Perez helped resolve multiple major labor disputes, including a massive six-week Verizon strike involving nearly 40,000 employees by building consensus and forging solutions that benefited retail workers, shareholders, and communities.
